Fleet vehicle security: what businesses should fit

Protecting several vehicles is a different exercise to protecting one. What scales, what does not, and how to avoid paying for capability nobody uses.

If you run several vehicles, the maths changes. A decision that costs a few pounds more per vehicle costs real money across a fleet, and a system nobody can be bothered to use gets left disarmed.

The three questions that decide it

Who drives what? If vehicles are assigned to individuals, codes and tags are simple. If anybody might drive anything, you need something that does not depend on remembering which vehicle has which code.

Where do they sit overnight? A secure yard is a different risk to twelve drivers taking vans home to twelve different streets. Home-parked fleets carry most of the risk.

What is in them? Vehicles carrying stock or tools need the load area addressed, not just the ignition. Our van security guide covers that in detail.

What tends to work across a fleet

Immobilisers on everything. The most cost effective single step. Every vehicle becomes undriveable without the right sequence, and there is no ongoing fee. On a fleet where vehicles go home with drivers, this is where we would start.

Tracking, if you need the operational data. Trackers earn their keep twice over on a fleet: recovery if one is stolen, and knowing where vehicles are day to day. Be aware that per vehicle subscriptions add up quickly, so decide whether you want that data or just the recovery.

Consistent kit across the fleet. Fitting the same system to every vehicle is worth a great deal. One set of instructions, one process for a new driver, one number to ring. Mixed systems get used badly.

Dash cams on everything. For a fleet this is often less about theft and more about liability. Being able to prove what happened at a junction is worth real money when a claim lands.

What tends not to work

Anything that relies on drivers remembering. If a system takes effort, it will be left off. Whatever you fit has to survive a wet Tuesday when somebody is running late.

Different systems on different vehicles. Usually the result of buying whatever was convenient at the time. It makes training harder and support slower.

Paying for telemetry nobody looks at. Full driver behaviour reporting is genuinely valuable to some operations and completely ignored by others. Be honest about which you are before committing to the subscription.

Insurance and duty of care

Worth checking with your broker before you buy:

  • Whether they require a particular tracker category on any of the vehicles
  • Whether tool or stock cover has its own security conditions
  • Whether professional installation and certificates are required

Getting that in writing first avoids fitting the wrong specification.

How we work with businesses

We fit on site, at your yard or at drivers’ homes, across the North West. For a fleet we would normally:

  1. Come and look at a representative vehicle
  2. Recommend one specification for the whole fleet
  3. Work through them at a pace that does not take vehicles off the road all at once

If you would rather we did them all in a weekend, we can talk about that too.

Talk to us about trade

Tell us how many vehicles, what they are, and where they sit overnight. We will tell you what we would fit and, honestly, what we would leave out. Dealerships, garages and leasing firms welcome as well.

Fitted at your home, across the North West

No garage visit and no day booked off work. Tell us where you are and what you drive.

Request a callback

Tell us about the car and we will ring you back, usually the same day. No charge for the advice and nobody will chase you afterwards.

We only use your details to reply about your enquiry. Privacy policy · Read our reviews
